Reader Voice — Privacy Policy
Effective September 28, 2026
Reader Voice is an Android app that reads EPUB and PDF books aloud in English, Spanish or Portuguese, translating texts in other languages on the device itself. It is developed and maintained by FERMATools, which is responsible for this app.
Summary
Reader Voice requires no sign-up, shows no ads and does not send your books or your reading history to anyone. The developer only receives anonymous usage statistics, which do not identify you and can be turned off.
Your books and your reading
The files you open, the text extracted from them, your reading position, bookmarks and preferences (speed, voice, pitch, text-cleaning options) are stored only in your device's internal storage. They are deleted when you remove the book from the app or uninstall the app.
Translation and language identification
Translation and language identification are done on the device by Google ML Kit. The text of your books never leaves the device. The first time a language is used, the app downloads the translation model from Google's servers (about 30 MB). To work and to improve the service, ML Kit sends Google technical information (device model and Android version, app version, configured and identified languages, performance measurements and error codes), encrypted (HTTPS). According to Google, this data is not shared with third parties. See the ML Kit data disclosure and Google's privacy policy.
Anonymous usage statistics
To learn which features are used and where to improve, the app sends anonymous statistics to Aptabase, a service designed not to identify people. Only the following is sent:
- events such as "app opened", "book imported", "reading", "timer", "bookmark" and commands coming from the watch or headphones;
- general information about these events: file format (EPUB/PDF), book language, number of sentences, minutes listened, speed, whether there was a translation and into which language, the speech engine and the pause options;
- the app and Android versions and the system language;
- a random session number, which changes after one hour of inactivity and is not stored on the device.
No name, e-mail, account, device or advertising identifier, location, or book titles, texts or files are sent. The data is sent encrypted (HTTPS) and is used only for aggregated statistics. To turn it off, open About (ⓘ icon in the library) and disable "Anonymous usage statistics".
Voice
Reading uses the text-to-speech engine installed on the device (for example, "Speech Services by Google"). If you choose a voice marked "online" in the app, the speech engine itself sends the sentences to its provider to generate the audio, under that provider's policy. "Offline" voices work without internet.
Permissions
- Internet: download the translation models and send the anonymous statistics.
- Notifications: show the reading controls in the notification and on the lock screen.
- Foreground service / keep awake: keep reading with the screen off.
The app only accesses the files you choose to open.
Children
The app is not directed at children and does not collect personal data from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with an updated effective date.
